What Does The Bible Say About Laziness?
Whether we’re talking about laziness in general or laziness in our Christian walk we can be sure the Bible has a lot to say about this subject. From the beginning of history God has called man to work. In Genesis 2:15 God put man to work in the Garden of Eden. He didn’t create us to just sit around and eat bon bons.
A Lazy Man Dishonors God
A lazy man not only dishonors God but does himself harm in the process. The Bible calls the lazy man a sluggard. It says the life of a sluggard is hard (Proverbs 15:19). It leads to poverty (Proverbs 14:23) and hunger (Proverbs 19:15). It’s a disgrace to be lazy (Proverbs 10:5).
God wants us to earn our own bread so we can eat (2Thessalonians 3:12). The Bible says we must work so that we can provide for our families and be able to give to others (Titus 3:14; Ephesians 4:28). How can we tithe to continue God’s work or help the needy when we are lazy and refuse to work?
When we are a faithful worker we will be a good witness to others. We will win their respect thereby opening the possibility of sharing the gospel. On the other hand, when we are lazy in our work ethic it begins to show in our attitude and walk with the Lord. We will be slothful in our Bible study and prayer life.
Proverbs 6:6-11 says to consider the ant and be wise. An ant is a hard worker, It stores its provisions in the summer and gathers it’s food at harvest. As a Christian we need to be wise and perform our work in a way that glorifies God.
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17
