How Can We Have Peace?

Fruit of the Spirit is peace

How Can We Have Peace?

This has been a historic week.  We’ve elected a new president.  A president that has people on both sides uncertain about the future.  Turmoil and unrest are all around us.  Riots are breaking out because people are “fearful” which results in more fear for everyone.  Each political side is calling the other hateful because they don’t agree with their agenda.

Most people agree that what we need is peace.  But what is the Biblical view of peace?

Peace, in the Bible does not mean an absence of trouble.  The Apostle Paul had peace even though he was in jail.  Christians can have peace no matter what the circumstances.  That is because Jesus gives peace and rest to all who come to Him in faith.  In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”.

In John 14:27 Jesus says “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”.  When we look at the outer circumstances surrounding us our natural response is fear.  But our spiritual response should be one of peace.  As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit living in us and when we give Him control we will have peace no matter what is going on in our country or the world.  Romans 8:6 says “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace”.

Peace is the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 says “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”.  So how are we able to maintain the fruits of the Spirit?

First, we can have peace when our minds are fixed on Jesus for He Himself is our peace,  Ephesians 2:14.  Isaiah 26:3 says God will keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him.

Secondly, the Lord gives us peace when we pray in faith.  Philippians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.  When we pray in faith we draw close to the Lord and He calms our fears.

Third, when we walk uprightly we enter into peace.  Even if the circumstances are so grave we face death, we know that we have peace with the Lord.  Isaiah 57:2 says “Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death”.

Even as we know we are living in the end times we can have comfort through knowing the peace of God.  So next time you turn on the TV and see the evil in the world remember that we belong to the Prince of Peace.
